The Texas guitar tradition runs deep. A gutsy school of blues playing, marked by thick tones, aggressive attack and
tons of technique, all delivered in a flamboyant, swaggering style that is endemic to the Lone Star State. From T-Bone
Walker and Clarence Gatemouth Brown on through Albert Collins and Freddie King, Billy Gibbons and the late Stevie
Ray Vaughan, the tradition of the Texas guitar slinger has lived on. The one name that ranks at the top of that
exclusive list is Johnny Winter, an international ambassador for rocking Texas blues and still going strong!
For over 30 years, Johnny Winter has been a guitar hero without equal. Signing to Columbia records in 1969, Johnny
immediately laid out the blueprint for his fresh take on classic blues a prime combination for the legions of fans just
discovering the blues via the likes of Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton. Constantly shifting between simple country blues
in the vein of Robert Johnson, to all-out electric slide guitar blues-rock, - Johnny has always been one of the most
respected singers and guitar players in rock and the clear link between British blues-rock and American Southern rock
(a la the Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd.) Throughout the '70s and '80s, Johnny was the unofficial torch-bearer
for the blues, championing and aiding the careers of his idols like Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker.
His recent Grammy nominated "I'm A Bluesman" disc Virgin/EMI, has only added to his Texas-sized reputation.
For this release, Johnny has again paired with his long-time producer Dick Shurman (Robert Cray, Wayne June Albert
Collins, Roy Buchanan), as well as Tom Hambridge (Susan Tedeschi, George Thorogood). Backing him on this CD is
his road-tested touring band of guitarist Paul Nelson, bassist Scott Spray, and newly added drummer Tony Beard with
guest appearances by such friends as keyboardist Reese Wynans (from Stevie Ray Vaughan's celebrated backing
group Double Trouble) and ace harmonica man James Montgomery among others.

The Toronto Star said it best…. “Danny Michel must be growing weary being labeled as one of this country’s most
undiscovered musical treasures. But it's true.” In 2008 Danny Michel grabbed the reigns firmly in his own hands and
independently released his 8th solo album, “Feather, Fur & Fin”. Since his defection from the music industry, he’s
barely been able to hold on. in 2008 alone he found himself earning his second Juno nomination, co-hosting a CBC
radio show, writing music for film and tv, running a studio and producing other artists (Ayla Brook, Damhnait Doyle,
Leeroy Stagger, Dog Bus), being the musical guest on three Vinyl Café tours with best selling author Stuart McLean,
not to mention recording & releasing “Feather, Fur & Fin” AND managing to squeeze in his own tours in between all
that. Michel is a musical chameleon, slipping into any genre with ease. Think “Paul Simon meets Frank Black”. Maybe
being born next to a candy factory might explain Danny’s ‘con’fectous sound.
Born next door to a candy factory, MapleMusic Recordings artist Danny Michel (mish-elle) has been described as
"Tom Waits meets Cheap Trick." It's a pretty accurate analogy as Danny's songs run the gamut from crunchy/sweet
pop songs to dark tales.
When armed with his incendiary band of Can-rock's best session players, Danny provides a rock show to blow the
roof off any club. Equally entertaining, his solo show lights the fuse for diehard and new fans alike. "I really like to put
on a show," states the self-proclaimed “freak about details." "Lights, sounds, and banter are important so it can be as
cool and special as it can be. If I just played an acoustic and sang I think I'd bore myself to death. Call it musical ADD."
Danny holds court on stage whether it's a room of 10 people or a festival of thousands.
Fearless and full of surprises, you never know which tricks he'll pull from his back pocket. Whether he's playing a
chime-solo on a cell phone, or attempting a song he's never played before on an out-of-tune piano, every moment is
fresh, especially in a world of a zillion guys with guitars. He helped pioneer (and master) the now ubiquitous looping
pedal board to give his solo show another layer. The prodigious Danny has been performing his electric shows since
before he was old enough to drive! With six prior solo albums and his first Juno nomination (Best New Artist 2005)
under his belt, Danny is clearly a career artist with only the tip of his musical iceberg revealed.
Danny will unveil his perfect new band in June to join these two worlds. Full of musicians who can play a variety of
instruments, this band can morph from a pop-rock firecracker into a Viking ship jug band with a quick rotation of
players & instruments. “I want the show to be able to go anywhere. I don't want to be confined to one style anymore. I
want to fly by the seat of our pants. I want to put on a show!”
His Spring 2006 release Valhalla--like all Danny records--is unclassifiable. Mash-up Frank Black with some of Johnny
Cash's story telling, and you'll get a sense of the direction his new songs have taken. For his seventh solo album,
Danny handed over control for the first time to outside producer Joao Carvalho (Hawksley Workman, Pilate, Boy).
Recorded partly at The Tragically Hip's Bathhouse Studio and partly in his own studio, Joao helped bring to life
Danny's wish for a stripped-down album more like his riveting live shows. It's Danny's most chilled out album to date,
and many tracks feature only guitar and his unique voice. Valhalla is sprinkled with appearances by some of Canadian
music's finest players. In addition to writing and recording his own material, Danny has begun to share his production
skills with other talent. In 2005 he produced Leeroy Stagger's Beautiful House and AA Sound System's new album.
"I love producing, when I help someone take their talent, songs, and vision to a higher level where they surprise
themselves," explains Danny. "When we're done a track and the artist goes "wow" and is really surprised and
impressed by what they've done, I know I did a good job. I love that look on their face."
You'll hear Danny's unique guitar playing on countless records from all genres. Whether tracking guitar in the UK with
electronica-pop band Dragonette to being Sarah Harmer's lead guitarist last year while she toured across Canada.
This year he's already fielded a request from Earl Slick (David Bowie's guitar player) to work on some tracks together
that feature guest vocals by David Bowie, Robert Smith (The Cure) and Danny himself. Perhaps it was a mixture of
Slick's support and Danny's 2004 homage to Bowie, Loving The Alien, that prompted davidbowie.com to promote
Danny's Spring 2006 tour to the U.K. and even hold a contest to win Danny's CD, obviously giving it the Bowie
lightning-bolt stamp of approval.
To see him play live is to experience something special. Just ask Michael Ondaatje or Stuart McLean. If he can stave off
requests to work his magic for other people, watch for Danny Michel to tote his bag of musical tricks and case full of
stories on tour across the continent (and beyond).

He's a lot of things to a lot of people - rock to some, smooth to others, AC to many. Alfie is established enough that
he's just Alfie - an incredibly gifted talent beyond any genre tag. He has long been considered one of the best vocal
talents in Canada, yet we know very little about Alfie Zappacosta and his music. Sure you know his chart topping
singles, Nothing Can Stand in Your Way, Passion, When I Fall in Love Again, We Should Be Lovers (plus many more),
and the fact that he has two JUNOs and an American Music Awards for his contribution of Overload to the Dirty
Dancing Soundtrack, but how much do you really know about the artist himself?
Alfie Zappacosta has a distinguished career and still today, he continues to write compelling lyric and melody. Yes
Alfie Zappacosta is a songwriter! He is also an accomplished guitarist, premier vocalist and actor. In 1995, Zappacosta
left his pop stardom behind to pursue a more intimate style of writing and performing. The roots of his new sound
started when Zappacosta began playing solo before crowds at a Toronto club. Playing only guitar, he explored new
harmonies and melodies, later combing rootsy elements such as harmonica and accordion, which eventually
manifested itself in a contemporary Jazz/AC sound.
“The difficult part was finding an audience that was willing to sit and listen to my songs.” states Zappacosta. "I had to
believe that a legitimate artist was allowed to grow and could be appreciated and accepted for producing music that
was heartfelt and not what the industry felt was appropriate for the times.” “The older I got, the more uncomfortable I
became.” Zappacosta confesses. “There were always elements of what is on the current project in my music. I wanted
to get back into a form of music that I knew I was not only capable of doing but also a style of music that would fulfill
me both artistically and spiritually. I realized that chasing down fads is really a losing proposition.” His passion for
beautiful melodies and grand songs manifested into four stunning CD's - Innocence Ballet, Dark Sided Jewel, Start
Again, Bonafide and his brand new CD – At the Church at Berkeley!

Hayes Carll delivers songs born of baptism-by-fire experience, world weary observations and sharp wit. While his
songs draw from Texas songwriting heroes such as Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark, Carll has managed to put a
stamp on his music that is truly his own.
As a performer, Carll’s clever anecdotes, genuine sincerity and self-deprecating humor invites listeners in to his world.
His confidence and charisma are second only to the quality of his songwriting. Audiences relate to his songs because
he sings to them as friends, immediately breaking down any barrier that might normally exist between the stage and
audience.
In May of 2009, Hayes Carll's Stingaree Music Festival celebrated the return of the Bolivar Peninsula. The area, still
recovering from the devastating results of a direct hit from hurricane Ike, also welcomed the return of a hometown
hero. To thank the Peninsula for their continued support, all profits from the festival were donated to the Bolivar
Peninsula Economic Relief fund.
After releasing two albums independently, Flowers And Liquor and the acclaimed sophomore record Little Rock,
singer/songwriter Hayes Carll found a home at Lost Highway.
On April 8, 2008, his debut for Lost Highway, Trouble In Mind, was released. The album showcased a collection of
songs that blend some of the finest elements of folk, country and rock with brainy, quirky lyrics. Since the release of
Trouble In Mind, Carll has toured non-stop, both with and without his band. Along the way he’s made many friends and
fans who truly appreciate his craft, humor, attitude, opinions and even his compassion.
In September of 2008, Carll won SONG OF THE YEAR at the 7th Annual Americana Music Association Honors &
Awards for his satirical “She Left Me For Jesus". He also received a nomination for ARTIST OF THE YEAR. In
December of 2008, Hayes Carll appeared and performed on Imus In The Morning where Don Imus called “She Left Me
For Jesus” the “greatest country song ever.”
As a result of Carll’s patience and hard work, Trouble In Mind was the #1 R&R Americana Album of 2008. It also
received recognition from Amazon, being awarded the #1 Country album and #9 Overall album for 2008.
Trouble In Mind has received consistently high-praise in the press, including glorious reviews on three different NPR
programs (All Things Considered, Fresh Air and The Bryant Park Project). Here’s what some others have had to say:
"He has a voice as tough and relentless as a late-night Lone Star brawl and a lyric sensibility worthy of an M.F.A.
creative-writing seminar." -The New Yorker.com
“Hayes Carll is the traveling Texas troubadour for today's X Generation… He's the snarky slacker with a heart of pure
Kerouac. He's a modern storyteller's dream, wrapped in a cloak of country-folk charm.” -Tulsa World
“Hayes Carll is an inheritor of the Texas songwriting tradition that includes Townes Van Zandt and Steve Earle. He’s
highly romantic and highly literary – and, sometimes, it seems, just plain high. But he lives up to his lofty antecedents –
singing in a drawl that’s as sexy as it is smart, and writing songs that are as charmingly self-deprecating as they are
self-mythologizing.” -Anthony DeCurtis,
***1/2 (out of 4) –USA Today
***1/2 (out of 4) –People **** -MOJO
“The creator of one of the year’s best country albums thus far….”
Grade A -Ken Tucker, Entertainment Weekly
“…a familiar Type-A mush mouthed drawler who’s smarter about the beat than his shambling ways would make your
think and funnier than shit when he wants to be, which is often.” **** -Robert Christgau, Blender
“…his songs are full of hard-drinking, hard-loving, hard-luck characters. But he’s no stumblebum in his songwriting.” -
Jon Pareles, New York Times

A Polyrhythmic Journey to Mali and a Tiny Symphony Inside a Light Bulb:
Jayme Stone’s Global Banjo Adventures
Jayme Stone keeps an ear to the ground. His curiosity and unlikely set of reference points started early with the quirky
physics of the banjo, led to a mysterious librarian who stocked his local public library with a vast trove of banjo
recordings, and landed him long-lasting lessons with a series of maestros, from Béla Fleck to Bill Frisell. Influenced by
Japanese poetry and Brazilian literature and featuring what he calls a “tiny symphony that takes place inside an
imaginary light bulb”, Stone’s album, The Utmost, won the 2008 Juno Award for Instrumental Album of the Year.
The most recent chapter in Stone’s musical travelogue takes place in Africa. He went knowing what’s still news to
most: that the hide-covered instrument with an “extra” drone string we call the banjo actually comes from West Africa.
He became particularly curious about the music that may not have made it across the ocean on slave ships headed
west from Senegal and Mali in the 1700-1800’s. An eight-week trip to Mali was supported by a prestigious Chalmers
Arts Fellowship and found Stone sitting in with Toumani Diabate and the Symmetric Orchestra in downtown Bamako,
lost in circles of Wassoulou polyrhythms and in a rural Dogon village with no electricity where he inadvertently
discovered a banjo predecessor unheard of in the West. The resulting album, Africa to Appalachia, is a boundary-
crossing musical collaboration with singer and kora maestro Mansa Sissoko. Produced by David Travers-Smith and
featuring celebrated ngoni master Bassekou Kouyate, the recording won the 2009 Juno Award for World Music Album
of the Year.
Stone is at work on new album that explores music based on folk dances from around the world: hornpipes,
mazurkas, straphspeys and sambas from Sweden, Scotland, Brazil, North America and more. The album will feature
fiddle pioneer Casey Driessen, gravity-defying guitarist Grant Gordy, Gaelic songbird Julie Fowlis, nyckelharpa
craftsman Olov Johansson, trumpet great Kevin Turcotte and others. Recording is set for spring 2010 with an album
release in fall 2010 (Canada) and spring 2011 (US and Europe).

"I've always wanted to be an artist who writes things that are real to me," Carolyn Dawn says. "I just want to be honest
in my music". The fresh-faced songwriter who originally hails from Northern Alberta drove 60 hours from her then
home, Vancouver, BC, Canada to build a career in Nashville. She seemingly never looked back. She never had to.
Arriving in 1995, Johnson developed her skill and reputation as a songwriter while working odd jobs to pay the bills. A
publishing deal led to cuts by artists including Jo Dee Messina, Patty Loveless, Kathy Mattea and more. Her first No. 1
as a writer came in 1999 with Chely Wright's "Single White Female." The milestones came quickly. She was named
Music Row Magazine's Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year in 2000, she toured behind Martina McBride for a year,
singing backgrounds and playing guitar for her and eventually signed a recording contract with powerhouse label
Arista/Nashville. Her first album, Room With A View, bowed in 2001 and launched her first hits as an artist including
"Georgia", "I Don't Want You To Go" and the top 5 smash "Complicated." Critical acclaim and the approval of her
peers poured in, and Johnson was honoured as the Academy of Country Music's Top New Female Vocalist in 2002.
The American Music Awards hailed her as Favorite New Country Artist the following year. She also received a Juno
award for Best Country Artist in her home country and to date has brought home 16 Canadian Country Music Awards.
High profile tours with Reba McEntire, Alan Jackson, Kenny Chesney and Keith Urban kept her out in the public eye
and she won fans all across the country. She then came with her second album, 2004's Dress Rehearsal, featuring the
US top 15 hit, "Simple Life", which reached #1 in Canada. Also included on the album were three Canadian top five
hits, "Head Over High Heels", "Dress Rehearsal" and "Die of A Broken Heart". In 2005 Arista and CDJ parted ways.
Energized and at the same time benefiting from the incredible education of making her first two albums, Johnson took
a brave step and made the wildly ambitious decision to record an album without a label deal in place. She wrote or co-
wrote all 12 songs on Love & Negotiation, produced eight of them and co-produced the other four with legendary
musician and producer Dann Huff. The album was released on Angeline/Universal Records. CDJ’s successes go well
beyond her artist career, including acting as an ambassador for Children’s Miracle Network for the last six years,
hosting her own syndicated radio show in Canada, developing and producing other artists, and of course
songwriting. From her earliest dreams of Nashville, songwriting has been at the core of Johnson's artistry. Johnson
recently signed a new publishing deal with highly acclaimed, award winning, Sea Gayle Music Publishing joining
forces with Brad Paisley, producer Frank Rogers, and songwriter Chris Dubois.
2010 sees the return of Carolyn to the radio and record marketplace after taking some time to start a family all the while
writing songs for her own projects or for others. Her new album co-produced by Frank Rogers will be worth the wait -
full of all the gems she has been storing up, now ready to shine. Her first single "Let Me Introduce Myself" came onto
the airwaves with welcoming arms grabbing the #1 most added spot two weeks in a row. Her album Love Rules will be
released early in the summer in plenty of time for people to learn all the lyrics before she heads out across Canada for
her first tour in almost 4 years.
It seems Canadians want more CDJ and they didn’t mind waiting for her.
